Hot August Night - Aug 7th, 2024

It was a groovy time for all out on the lawn of Sky Rose Chapel – the crowning jewel of Rose Hills Memorial Park and Cemetery. The Los Angeles County Funeral Directors Association’s annual vendor-centric event was full of peace, love, and music – just like this year’s theme: WOODSTOCK!

As guests arrived - many looking like, really far out, man - they were invited to grab a beverage and visit the vendor tables. A bingo card was given to attendees to mark off the tables they visited. We collected all the completed cards, and later in the evening a raffle was held, and a winner was drawn.

Just before dinner, a very special award was presented by our current President Isis Huckins. Isis took a moment to commend Fred Nalder for providing his career-spanning support to all who know him. Isis spoke not only of Fred’s personal guidance in her career, but also the influence he imparts and the example he embodies. Fred genuinely connects with others, as a friend and as a mentor. His 38 years as a funeral professional include great leadership in our industry as a member and past president of both the LACFDA and CFDA. Although Fred was not present at the moment of his tribute, everyone rose to their feet to give a well-deserved standing ovation.

Then we named the winner of our costume contest. While we understood that not everyone could put on their late ’60s finest, running between work and Rose Hills, we did want to recognize those who added to the atmosphere by dressing up! It was a hard call once we narrowed it down to three particularly hippied-out individuals. But there can only be one winner, and those of us judging agreed – it was the braids that pushed him over the finish line!

Our costume contest winner!

The big wins did not end there. Vendors brought a wonderful assortment of prizes for the drawing at the end of our evening. We got to hear a bit about each vendor before they drew a lucky someone’s business card from those collected at their table. From bottles of wine and fancy coolers, to gift certificates and a huge Day of the Dead themed basket – there were so many fun giveaways, courtesy of our wonderful suppliers!

A big thanks to all who came out. It was a SOLD-OUT event once again! And thank you to our vendors who participated this year. We appreciate you!
