You, Me, & the M.E. Event - May 15, 2024, Hollywood Forever Cemetery
As an eager crowd gathered outside the chapel at the one and only Hollywood Forever Cemetery, anticipation grew. Gray skies signaled evening rolling in. Peacocks squawked, urging us to take our seats. But inside, the finishing touches were still being put into place for what would be an event to remember: You, Me, and the M.E., presented by the Los Angeles Country Funeral Directors Association, in conjunction with the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner. This was an opportunity for LACFDA members, non-members, and students to learn about our county’s medical examiner, straight from Chief of Operations, Brian Elias, and Captain John Kades.
Their presentation was full of history, statistics, structuring info and an insightful view of their general operations. They were candid about the challenges faced in their department, but this candor allowed us to better understand some of the challenges we face when working with the Medical Examiner’s office. Ultimately, our eyes were opened to how much this department is responsible for, and what they accomplish on a daily basis, beyond the scope of what funeral homes see when working with them.
Both Chief Elias and Captain Kades were generous with their time and information as we moved from the primary presentation into a Q & A period. And the questions continued, one on one, as the back doors of the chapel opened up into the Columbarium for a reception and mixer. Funeral professionals and students mingled over appetizers, drinks, and sweets. A raffle was held to benefit the local chapter of the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. The Columbarium was buzzing with discussion among colleagues, and laughter among friends. Great thanks to Chief Brian Elias and Captain John Kades for making this memorable night possible.
To all who attended – thank you so much for your continuing support of the LACFDA. To those who missed the event- we hope to see you in the near future! The LACFDA is glad to continue a legacy of community, education and camaraderie within our funeral profession.
